STATEMENT OF PURPOSE

Scott Trimble and I will be looking at the 1995 excavation of 2251 College Hall as an entrance point into the wide history of the University of California. Using the research and data collected by Laurie Wilkie and the students who assisted her, we will be able to fill in a timeline with content rather than just empty uncorrelated information.

This project would therefore be directed to two types of audiences: first, those who have an invested interest in the history of Cal, and second, and more importantly, those who are involved in the field of archeology. This later audience would be interested in several aspects which our project is to explore, including the different contexts in which archeology is practiced, the specific excavation at the site, and the process in which the individual archeologist and their team experiences the project and how they are able to interpret and quantify their results.

While this project seems large, Scott has already amassed much information of Cal history, and we have already received many folders full of research papers, documentation of the dig, artifact photos, and we also have an extensive contact list which will assist in our goal of finding tangible information to illustrate the actual process of the dig, i.e. the experience of the archeologist through sound-bites, photos, videos, etc.

Our goal is to put together a cohesive project on a CD-ROM that will not only interest the intended audience by content, but will also be entertaining and informative to anyone who interacts with it.
