==============================================
James Albert SIMMONS

NAME: The name "H. SIMMONS" is written in Emma (SIMMONS) HERWIG's obituary in 1921. On her death certificate it says "Harry SIMMONS", information provided by Adolph HERWIG, Emma's son. Harry might have been a nickname for Henry, since the oldest son of Harry and Elizabeth was a Henry SIMMONS. But that doesn't fit with how his name is usually referred to as James or James Albert SIMMONS.

MARRIAGE: Married 18 Mar 1833 in Cuddeson, Oxfordshire, England, to Elizabeth Frances HINTON. Witnesses were John STONE and Henry YOUNG.

IMMIGRATION: The "Index to Bount Immigrants 1832-1842" that lists arrivals in New South Wales shows James and Eliza SIMMONS coming on the ship "Hero of Malown" on 24 Apr 1839. James was a farm laborer, protestant, 26 years old on 9 Mar 1839, baptised 3 Apr 1814 and native of Oxfordshire, could read and write, and was the son of James SIMMONS (laborer) and Jane (farm servant). Eliza SIMMONS was a laundress, protestant, 25 years old, baptised 15 Nov 1815 of Cuddeson in Oxfordshire, daughter of Richard HINTON (laborer) and Sophie. They had children Charles (6 years old on 11 Jan 1839), Sarah (4 years old, died at sea), and John (infant, died at sea). from a letter to Russell GRAF of Syracuse, IN, by Sue E. McBETH, a professional genealogist, sent to me by Nona ADAM, of Round Rock, TX.

RESIDENCE: from Mandy BALLENDEN, "James was listed in the Hunter Valley Directory - 1841 as a labourer and living on the Paterson River area along with his wife Elizabeth."

RESIDENCE: On the 18 Apr 1841 baptism for son Henry SIMMONS, James SIMMONS was a "labourer of Paterson River" at Houghton Parish (by Allyn River), County Durham, New South Wales, Australia.

RESIDENCE: On the 25 Jun 1843 baptism for daughter Mary SIMMONS, James SIMMONS was a "settler of Mullinro, Paterson River" at Houghton Parish (by Allyn River), County Durham, New South Wales, Australia.

RESIDENCE: On the 23 Oct 1845 baptism for daughter Eliza Elizabeth SIMMONS, James SIMMONS was a "farmer of Gresford" at Houghton Parish (by Allyn River), County Durham, New South Wales, Australia.

RESIDENCE: On the 20 Jun 1847 baptism for daughter Emma Ellen SIMMONS, James SIMMONS was a "labourer of Norwood Patterson River" at Houghton Parish (by Allyn River), County Durham, New South Wales, Australia.

RESIDENCE: On the 17 Sep 1848 baptism for daughter Emma Ellen SIMMONS, James SIMMONS was a "farmer of Norwood Estate of Gibbs Esq" at Houghton Parish (by Allyn River), County Durham, New South Wales, Australia.

RESIDENCE: On the 2 Jan 1850 baptism for daughter Mary Ann SIMMONS, James SIMMONS was a "farmer of Elms Hall, Patersons River" at Houghton Parish (by Allyn River), County Durham, New South Wales, Australia.

RESIDENCE: On the 14 Mar 1852 baptism for son James Albert SIMMONS, James SIMMONS was a "farmer of Elms Hall" at Houghton Parish (by Allyn River), County Durham, New South Wales, Australia.

BIOGRAPHY: from Mandy BALLENDEN, "It is believed Elizabeth left James and some of her family and went to Sydney and joined the Mormon Church. She left for America with some of her children and may have married a Captain or a Mr. SMITH. It is known that Sophia Jane [SIMMONS] left with her Mother but of the others I don't know."

IMMIGRATION: The following account came from a Los Angeles history written in the early 1900s, "On May 25, 1856, Mr. and Mrs. Simmonds and their family of 8 children left Australia on the sailing vessel Jennie Ford, bound for San Francisco. When they were out about three weeks their boat ran on a coral reef and came near being wrecked and later put in at Tahite for nine days to make repairs. The next and only stop was at Honolulu where fresh water and a cargo of sugar was taken on. Some time after leaving there they ran into rough weather and were driven far south of their course and finally arrived at San Pedro, August 19, 1856. /// The Simmonds family landed there and lived for a while in a tent they had brought with them. Later on Mr. Simmonds took charge of the half way station for General Banning's stage line and here the family stayed for one year. From there they moved into Los Angeles and occupied an adobe house at the corner of Sixth and Spring streets, where the Hayward Hotel now stands. It was at this place that Mr. and Mrs. Herwig first met. They were married in a small cottage that stood on Figueroa street between Pico and Washington streets, April 30, 1861. Antone Menz was best man and Mrs. S.J. North, the bride's sister was matron of honor."

OCCUPATION: legend, Mr. SIMMONS was a sea captain in Australia and the South Seas. So were John James NORTH (husband of Sophia J. SIMMONS) and William R. HOWLAND (husband of Sarah A. SIMMONS).

DEATH: James SIMMONS died sometime between 1857 (when the family arrived in California) and 1862 (when Elizabeth remarried). Maryanne "Mandy" BALLENDEN says that he died 17 Nov 1865 in Dungog, Australia. This would imply that either he deserted Elizabeth or she left him.

BIOGRAPHY: from Mandy BALLENDEN, "There is also a James Albert SIMMONS who is buried with his father at Summer Hill near Dungog. He was born about 1853 and died on 20 January 1871. There is a story about the red bricks around the graves of the SIMMONDS family at Bendolba Church of England Cemetery. It is believed that Francis Eliza Elizabeth also went to the USA with her mother and she was the one who sent the red bricks home to be placed around the family plot and there were supposed to be enough bricks left over for every family member to have one each. What became of the bricks I don't know, other that the ones that are around the graves at Bendolba to this day and they are still red."

Elizabeth Frances HINTON

BIOGRAPHY: from Mandy BALLENDEN, "It is believed Elizabeth left James and some of her family and went to Sydney and joined the Mormon Church. She left for America with some of her children and may have married a Captain or a Mr. SMITH. It is known that Sophia Jane [SIMMONS] left with her Mother but of the others I don't know."

CENSUS: 1860 U.S. Census (Los Angeles, California. page 355). Mrs. Elizabeth SIMMONS, 45y, born England, laundress, personal estate $50. Children listed: Henry, Emma M., Sarah A., Mary A., James A., Thomas, and Harriet M. SIMMONS, and Sophia J. NORTH (with John NORTH, born England, mariner). All the children were born in Australia except Harriet, born in California.

CENSUS: 1870 U.S. Census (San Bernardino County, California). George WILSHER, 48y, born England, farmer, real estate $1000, personal estate $400. His wife Elizabeth, 53y, born England. Children listed: George, Henry, Anna,Joseph, Emily, and Edward WILSHER, and Maria SIMMONS, all born in Utah (sic).

DEATH: The San Bernardino County Register of Deaths (FHL US/Can Microfilm #1290195) lists 4 Nov 1873, Elizabeth WILSHIRE, white, 60y, female, married, housewife, born England, died of paralysis, physician or coroner D.J. EVANS.

CHILD 1 Charles SIMMONDS

MARRIAGE: Charles SIMMONS married Mary Ann SMITH in Glenrose, Clarence Town, Australia, in the presence of James WILKINSON of Glenwilliam and James LARKINS of Gresford. Marriage performed by Arthur McEWEN, Sheriff of Clarence Town and Presbyterian minister. Charles did not go to America and it appears that he did not die prior to this time (* but maybe he was the son who returned to Australia), so it is likely that this is the same Charles SIMMONS. Between 1858 and 1871 there were at least eleven children born to a father named Charles SIMMONS.

CHILD 2 Sarah SIMMONS

DEATH: Died at sea.

CHILD 3 John SIMMONS

BIRTH-DEATH: Born and died at sea between England and Australia.

CHILD 4 Henry SIMMONS

BIRTH: On the 18 Apr 1841 baptism for son Henry SIMMONS, James SIMMONS was a "labourer of Paterson River" at Houghton Parish (by Allyn River), County Durham, New South Wales, Australia. Henry was born 19 Aug 1840, vol. 25, no. 1926.

OCCUPATION: Laborer in 1860

MARRIAGE: Possibly he was the Henry SIMMONS who married Isabel (or Isabela) CELAYA on Feb 6 1870 in Los Angeles County, California.

CHILD 5 Mary SIMMONS

BIRTH: On the 25 Jun 1843 baptism for daughter Mary SIMMONS, James SIMMONS was a "settler of Mullinro, Paterson River" at Houghton Parish (by Allyn River), County Durham, New South Wales, Australia. She was born 23 Nov 1832 (sic, probably 1842), vol. 27, no. 2038.

CHILD 6 Sophia J. SIMMONS

27, no. 2038. I had identical dates for Sophia J. SIMMONS, so either they were twins, or there was some mix-up.

CENSUS: 1870 U.S. Census (Los Angeles County, California. page 505). John James NORTH, 33y, born England, farmer (in 1860 he was a mariner), real estate $1000, personal estate $100. His wife Sophia, 26y, born Australia. Children listed: Kornas W., Mary E., Eva Emma, and Frank NORTH. The family is living near Henry HERWIG's family. Also nearby, there is a William NORTH, 62y, born NY, laborer, personal estate $200, no family. Is this William related?

CHILD 7 Eliza Elizabeth SIMMONS

BIRTH: On the 23 Oct 1845 baptism for daughter Eliza Elizabeth SIMMONS, James SIMMONS was a "farmer of Gresford" at Houghton Parish (by Allyn River), County Durham, New South Wales, Australia. She was born 2 Oct 1845, vol. 30, no. 2885.

CHILD 8 Emma Ellen SIMMONS

BIRTH: On the 20 Jun 1847 baptism for daughter Emma Ellen SIMMONS, James SIMMONS was a "labourer of Norwood Patterson River" at Houghton Parish (by Allyn River), County Durham, New South Wales, Australia. She was born 20 Apr 1846, vol. 32, no. 2539.

CENSUS: 1870 U.S. Census (Los Angeles County, California. page 505). Henry HERWIG, 33y, born Germany, farmer, real estate $1200, personal estate $200. His wife Emma, 24y, born Australia. Children listed: Caroline, Emma, Adolph, and Clara HERWIG. The family is just a few houses away from John James NORTH's family.

DEATH: The obituary stated that she died because of "a fall at her home". The death certificate is recorded at CA Vital Statistics in Sacramento. The certificate has an unintelligible description of the cause of her death due to a "fall". She died at Lutheran California Hospital. Buried in Rosedale Cemetery. Undertaker was Cunningham & O'Connor.

FAMILY: Also at death she had great-grandchildren Everett BOSSHARD and Blythe RINQUIST, and grandchild Mrs. Ione RINQUIST.

CHILD 9 Sarah Ann SIMMONS

BIRTH: On the 17 Sep 1848 baptism for daughter Emma Ellen SIMMONS, James SIMMONS was a "farmer of Norwood Estate of Gibbs Esq" at Houghton Parish (by Allyn River), County Durham, New South Wales, Australia. She was born 5 May 1848, vol. 33, no. 2749.

DEATH: Sarah Ann HOWLAND died 5 Feb 1926 at 2116 West Washington Street, Los Angeles, CA. She was born 5 May 1843 in Australia, age 82y 9m 0d, the widow of William R. BIRTH-LEGEND: Family legend told that she was born at sea between England and Australia. It seems, though, that she was born 7.5 to eight months after the family landed in California from Australia. They arrived in California on 19 August 1856. Her older siblings were all born in Australia. Before that, both of her parents had come from England.

MARRIAGE: FHL US/Can microfilm #1290190; San Bernardino Marriage Records; 20 September 1874 San Bernardino County, California; by B.F. Mathews, JP; names written as Marion Case & Harriet M. Simmonds.
