Note - !BIRTH: Paulus ROETTER was born in Nurnberg, Mittelfranken, Bayern (Bavaria), Germany, on 4 Jan 1806. The LDS IGI extract says that he was born 5
July 1806. His father is said to have been a Lutheran reverend.
!BIOGRAPHY: Paulus studied art in Nuremburg, Dusseldorf, and Munich, and worked briefly in Paris. In 1825 he settled down in Thun and Interlaken,
Switzerland where he became famous as a landscape painter and taught in the schools for twenty years.
!BIOGRAPHY: In 1845, with his family and friends, Paulus ROETTER embarked for America to found a communistic colony or settlement. The plan
failed because of their hard struggle in the new environment and he instead established himself in St. Louis, MO, in 1845.
!BIOGRAPHY: From 1845-1853, he was installed in the parsonage of St. Mark's Evangelical Church at Third and Soulard Streets. He served as a
minister and teacher for the pioneer congregation. He taught art at Central High School and was known and respected for his profound piety.
!CENSUS: 1850 U.S. Census (St. Louis, St. Louis, Missouri, enum. 2 Aug 1850). Paul ROETTER is 44 years old, a teacher, born in Germany. His wife
Anna is 25 years old. Children listed: Arnold (15), Gert. (12), Anna (9), Lydia (4), Salome (2), and [unreadable] (2/12). They live in the
household of the tailor Albert SANDERLOPER (sp?), age 40, born in Germany.
!BIOGRAPHY: On 22 Feb 1853, Washington University was established and ROETTER was made a member of the faculty. He taught modern languages and
was the first to teach drawing. His compensation was fixed at $500 per year. He also worked in close association with Dr. George ENGELMANN and
gained an interest in natural history, making many drawings of biological specimens.
!BIOGRAPHY: From 1853-1854, Paulus ROETTER made detailed drawings of specimens on a government expedition under the direction of the War
Department that was engaged in biological research from the Mississippi River to the Pacific Ocean. The purpose was to locate a suitable railroad
route from the Mississippi to the West Coast.
!BIOGRAPHY: In 1854, "View of Iron Mountain" was painted. He also made pencil drawings of the the iron fields south of St. Louis.
!BIOGRAPHY: In 1856, the expedition reports were published. In part V, page 57, it has the following statement, "All the figures herewith
presented are credited to Paulus ROETTER."
!BIOGRAPHY: Paulus ROETTER was listed in the 1856-1857 "Catalogue of the Officers of Washington University" as a Teacher of Drawing of the
Academic Department.
!BIOGRAPHY: In 1858, George ENGELMANN's "The Cactaceae of the Boundary", part of the "Report of the U.S. and Mexican Boundary Survey", was
published with many of Paulus ROETTER's drawings (61 illustrations). Henry SHAW, who founded St. Louis' Shaw Garden was at one time in search of
a botanist and was refered to one of the best -- Dr. ENGELMANN. ROETTER was long associated with ENGELMANN and today some of his original
drawings are in Shaw's Museum and "recognized by authorities as being among the finest ever made."
!BIOGRAPHY: On 11 May 1859, the Mary Institute for girls was founded and ROETTER was one of the first drawing teachers there.
!BIOGRAPHY: In 1859, "O'Fallon Park" was painted. It was once owned by the NASH family, then the Missouri Historical Society, and now it is at
the Jefferson Memorial, St. Louis. The painting shows Victorian gentlemen at ease on the bluffs, a narrow dirt road (probably Broadway), and the
river with the Illinois hills in the background.

beneath) and also a 2nd prize in the same category.

!BIOGRAPHY: In Jun 1861, Washington University laid him off due to financial problems from the Civil War and decreased student enrollment. Zeus,
a gym instructor, was also let go.
!BIOGRAPHY: On 31 Aug 1861, the drawing of the "Residence and Headquarters of General Fremont" appeared in this issue of "Harper's Weekly
Magazine". On 16 Nov 1861, "General Fremont's Army on the March -- Scene Near Warsaw, Missouri" appeared in "Harper's Weekly Magazine". On 23
Nov 1861, "Indian Scouts in General Lane's Camp" and a portrait of General LANE appeared in "Harper's Weekly Magazine". The picture had great
details of the Delaware Indians' costumes, feathers, plumes, ornaments, and utensils. There was also another pencil sketch, "General Fremont's
Camp at Jefferson City, Missouri".

!BIOGRAPHY: Coddie FRASER's notes say that Frances TRIMBLE told her that Lydia was very beautiful and was called the "Belle of St. Louis".
!RESIDENCE: The 1865 St. Louis City Directory lists Lydia P. ROETTER, teacher at Lafayette School, residing at 10 Hickory Street.
!OCCUPATION: An 11 Dec 1866 letter of resignation (to take effect 21 Dec 1866) to the Board of Directors shows that Lydia P. ROETTER was first
a pupil and then a teacher at the Clark School, St. Louis. On 3 Jan 1867, she would marry Friedrich Karl CASTELHUN.
!CENSUS: 1920 U.S. Census (San Francisco, San Francisco, CA). Lydia CASTELHUN is 65 years old. Children: Carl (37) and Ella (35). They lied
about their ages since Lydia was actually 75, Carl was 53, and Ella was 52. Paul TRIMBLE said that Ella was always self-conscious about age.
During World War I, Ella tutored Frances in German while her father was away at war. One day Frances practiced by saying how old her
grandmother was. This greatly upset Ella so much that she would no longer teach Frances any German. Ella didn't think that Frances should
know how old her grandmother was, much less say it out loud!
!DEATH: Grandma Frances' notes say, "Lydia Pauline Roetter Castelhun died in 1926, I believe. She spent all but the last day or two of her
final illness (a bowel obstruction) at our Spruce St. home. As I recall, I was a Junior in High School at the time of her death - which would
confirm the 1926 date. I think we had lived in the Spruce Street house only a short time then." Other notes say, "... died from bowel
obstruction. She had a heart condition which made surgery inadvisable."
!OBITUARY: From either the San Francisco Chronicle or Examiner, 15 May 1926, "CASTLEHUN -- In this city, May 13, 1926, Lydia Pauline, widow of
the late Dr. Frederick Karl CASTELHUN, beloved mother of F.C., Ella, Dr. Paul, J. Erwin and the late Walter CASTELHUN, Mrs. M.C. DARNTON of
New York and Ernest CASTELHUN of St. Louis, a native of St. Louis. /// Notice of funeral will appear in Tuesday morning's papers."
!BURIAL: Lydia Pauline CASTELHUN was buried 18 May 1926 at Cypress Lawn, Colma, San Mateo, CA. On 28 May 1927 she was transferred to Mountain
View Cemetery, Piedmont Avenue, Oakland, Alameda County, CA. The burial records say that she was 79 years old, born in St. Louis, died in San

!BIOGRAPHY: In the 1960s Paul TRIMBLE wrote some short histories based on the oral tradition passed down from his mother Frances. He wrote,
"Although born of German nobility, he [Friedrich Karl CASTELHUN] nevertheless entertained lofty ideas of justice. He always felt that the
American Indian was greatly wronged by the principle of Manifest Destiny which robbed the Red Man of his lands. He was also a staunch
believer in democracy, but at the same time, he never forgot, nor allowed his children to forget, his German heritage. Partly in tribute to
his new home in democratic America, he declined to use the 'von' in his name after he settled here."
!EDUCATION: Received his MD from the University of Michigan in about 1852 or 1857, later studied in Vienna for two years.

celebrated his friends and admirers subscribed to a fund for the purpose of having his celebrated poem, 'Pflegt die Deutsche Sprache,' cast in
bronze and the tablet presented to the German-American Normal College at Milwaukee. The tablet has just been finished and is on exhibition at
213 Kearny street. It is a magnificent piece of the sculptor's art, the work of M.P. NIELSEN. A bust of Dr. CASTELHUN in relief surmounts
the tablets, while the poem, with an appropriate dedication, fills the entire space of the tablet, which is 22 by 33 inches."

Montana, in 1910 (March) by train from Chicago. The government offered families a piece of land if they would come out to Montana, work up
the land + live there. All the kids were young, my father [William] being only 10 yrs old. When they got there it was horribly cold + snowy
+ they had to pitch a tent in which to live. They had 1 horse for transportation + had to keep the horse in the tent with them so it wouldn't
freeze to death outdoors. They were there just a short time when my grandfather Daniel got very sick with a goiter problem. The 2 older sons
(Paul + Elmer) had to get on the horse + travel miles looking for a farm house where they could get help for their sick father. The farmer
brought his wagon to the tent, they put Grandpa in the wagon + took him to the nearest town which was Roundup, Montana -- a few hours trip,
but Grandpa was too sick + died soon after they arrived. The town of Roundup had something like our modern day garage + bake sale to earn
money to give to Albina so she could take the train back to Chicago with the children after they buried Daniel in the Roundup Cemetary. The 2
elder sons stayed for about 6 months + worked in town to pay for Daniel's funeral expenses. So that is how Paulus' son Daniel died (age 49)."
