born 31 October 1864 in California
d/o Samuel Bell McKEE and Miss DAVIS
died 6 August 1948 in Alameda County, CA

Sally McKEE, the daughter of Judge Samuel Bell McKEE (a graduate of Hastings Law School, 1877), was born in Oakland in 1866. She married a Mr. SPENS-BLACK and became Mrs. Sally McKee SPENS-BLACK. After her husband died, she inherited his large estate and gave a large portion of it it to Cal for scholarships, research, etc.

Over three generations of students, Mrs. SPENS-BLACK worked hard for promoting student welfare, especially those who were pre-med or pre-law. Since it was her belief that "worthy and deserving students shall not be denied the privilege of proper housing", she donated $500,000 to the building of residence halls. She died in Berkeley in 1948 at the age of 82. Unit 3 was opened in Fall 1963.
