Scott's Health Tips:

Halloween Safety
Health Tip #9, 24 October 1996

When the crypt doors creak, and the tombstones quake, spooks come out for a swinging wake.
Happy haunts materialize, and begin to vocalize. Grim Grinning Ghosts come out to socialize!

Now don't close your eyes, and don't try to hide, or a silly spook may sit by your side.
Shrouded in a daft disguise, they pretend to terrorize. Grim Grinning Ghosts come out to socialize!

6th Floor Jack-O-Lantern 1995Only a few more days until Halloween! If you are going to go trick-or-treating this year, the best place to go is Freeborn or Putnam Halls since there will be a dance, haunted house, and lots of candy. But if you want to be more adventurous, use some common sense out there. Some good places to go are Northside or the houses north and west of Shattuck & University. Go with a large group of people, avoid the dark areas, and skip the houses with the Dobermans guarding the gates. Here are some fun safety tips from Halloween Quiz on the Internet:

  • Young children should always go trick or treating with an adult.
  • Carry a flashlight.
  • Plan your entire route and make sure your family knows what it is.
  • Be very cautious of strangers.
  • Accept treats only in the doorway. Never go inside a house.
  • Visit only houses where lights are on.
  • Be sure and say Thank You for your treats.
  • Don't play near lit jack-o-lanterns.
  • Walk on sidewalks and driveways.
  • Cross the street at the corner or in a crosswalk.
  • Wait until you get home and your parents check your candy before you eat it.

Also, be sure your costume is flame resistant and visible to motorists through bright colors or reflective tape. Dont wear high heels, baggy clothing, or constrictive masks. You can buy materials and props at the little Halloween stores down College Avenue and over on Shattuck.

You can buy pumpkins at local supermarkets like Andronicos or Safeway, and even at the Durant-Darling Florist right down the street from us. When you are creating your jack-o-lantern, be sure to always cut away from you and others so nobody gets cut. If you do get cut, wash the wound immediately with soap and water, sterilize it (if necessary) with an alcohol wipe, and then put on some antibiotic ointment and a bandaid. Unfortunately, we cant use real candles in the Halls, so find a small flashlight substitute to light up the pumpkins face. After trick-or-treating, dont eat any candy that looks like it has been opened or tampered with.

    HAVE FUN!
