Cindy's Health Tips:

Hoarseness
Health Tip #14, 28 November1996

What are the causes of hoarseness?
Hoarseness is caused by a problem in the vocal cords. In adults a virus is most often responsible for the development of hoarseness or laryngitis when no other symptoms are present.

How long will hoarseness last?
Hoarseness could last just one night. As with any symptom of an upper respiratory tract infection, hoarseness may linger after other symptoms disappear. When hoarseness is mild, the most common cause is cigarette smoke. Here are some triggers to persistent hoarseness:

  • cysts on the vocal cords
  • cancer (but this cause is very rare)
  • overuse of the voice

What can I do to heal my vocal cords?

  • Nature must heal the inflamed area.
  • Humidifying the air with a vaporizer or taking in fluids can offer some relief.
  • Rest the vocal cords. (Dont talk too much.)
  • Do not cry or shout.

When should I consult a doctor?
If persistent hoarseness is not associated with either a viral infection or with smoking, it should be investigated by a doctor. The amount of time to wait before seeing a doctor is controversial. One month is an appropriate time. If you are a smoker, stop smoking and wait one month.

What are some thing I should NOT do?

  • Do not cry or shout.
  • Do not whisper. That actually puts more strain on the vocal cords.
