Acne

How do we get Acne?

Acne is caused when skin oils plug the openings of the hair follicles. The accumulation of oils allows bacteria to multiply in that area, which grows into pimples. Not only do natural oils cause acne, but constant contact with mineral or cooking oil also aggravates your skin condition.

What can we do at home to prevent or treat Acne problems?

  • Wash your face with soap and water to remove skin oil. Washing does not cure affected areas, but it does reduce spreading.
  • Apply steam or heat to affected areas to open clotted pores.
  • Natural sunlight helps if used conscientiously.
  • Wash your hair daily to remove excess oils
  • Do NOT touch your hands to your face
  • Do NOT pick, squeeze, or rub affected areas. This often results in scarring.
  • Avoid greasy creams or makeup.
  • Wash your hands to reduce the amount of bacteria.

Can we get Acne through the foods we eat?

No, typically, you will not get Acne through your diet. However, if you are allergic to a foods or if eating a certain foods does aggravate your problem, then try to avoid them. There is no evidence that chocolates or sweets give you pimples. That is a cruel myth!

    What if the problem persists?

Topical treatments are available. Applications including benzoyl peroxide, retinoic acid, and antibiotic lotions can be used. Some of these medications may be prescription only. If the self-help measures fail, then you may want to consult a doctor about your skin problems. There is a specialist at Tang who can help you find what you need and can prescribe medication to you.
